There had been a great deal of talk on my Degree course about the nature of place; the spirituality of Landscape, the sense of self in landscape and the role of photography in translating these themes in the process of image making. I thought the notion of being at one with a place wasn’t quite enough to justify an image of some hills, so decided to make a series of images in which “I” was inhabiting the spaces I knew very well and had some connection with. I went home to my parent’s house in Northumberland during the Easter break and decided to substitute my old bike for me in the images so they also became a form of self portraiture. Back at college when I had finished processing and printing, I realised I had been cynical about the whole thing and there can be a sense of belonging to a landscape or place and it was possible to at least try to convey this in an image.
